Life isn’t beautiful all the time and neither are we. 90% of everything is made up of messy bits. And yet, we love our lives in the Instagram and plastic surgery age*. We want things to be perfect. We want to be perfect and we’re becoming more and more obsessed as enhancements are becoming easier and more affordable. There’s a lot of talk about acceptance, but not as much action. We’re just not happy and we’re gonna change it, darn it!
But the world is a very messy place and we have to go through the messy to get the reward. You have to slough through a lot of research before you can draw a conclusion, through thousands and thousands of versions, amendments, bricks, litres of concrete, arguments and unexpected surprises before you can finally walk into and enjoy a building. Struggling, doubting and lots of flared tempers before a project is complete or a contract is concluded.
We seem to understand that things take time, yet we expect immediate results from ourselves and from others. We want to be amazing and wonderful right now and demand that from our employees, partners, friends and children. We demand that our bodies to stay young, that we are always energised and inspired and the smartest person in the room. We want to show the world that our friends are all attractive, adorable millionaires and that our children are obedient geniuses. We insist that we must be happy and go lucky. Everything now. Everything perfect.
What we’re really doing is causing frustration with our own shortcomings – which are never really shortcomings, just works in progress – resentment of others, disillusionment in the world around us. Despite our rah-rah attitude towards saving the earth and recycling up to our eyeballs – we ourselves want to dispense and throw away today and be renewed tomorrow. We’ve become so very impatient and unsatisfied.
Newsflash Linda! Organic still rules. You cannot cut and paste yourself and “Abracadabra!” have high emotional intelligence or watch a Youtube video on how to deal with your life.
Youtube doesn’t handle your life. You still have to go out and do it. Get your hands dirty. Have the difficult conversations. Fight a bit. Make up a lot. Hug it out. Sort stuff out the old fashioned way.
Messy is good. It’s irreplaceable and it’s real. We can all do with a lot more of it. #YouNeedToCalmDown.
*An excerpt from a recent article:
New data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows there were nearly a quarter million more cosmetic procedures performed in 2018 than the previous year. According to the ASPS annual plastic surgery statistics report, there were more than 17.7 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2018, a number that has risen steadily over the past five years.
The statistics also reveal a rise in new trends in body-shaping procedures, with a spike in non-invasive fat reduction, as well as surgeries such as breast augmentations and liposuction.
